Type your LLC's name into Sunbiz and look at what comes up. For a lot of small business owners in Florida, it's their front door. The street, the apartment number, the whole thing. And it isn't only Sunbiz. Plenty of websites copy those records, so the address you filed in five minutes can follow your company around for years.
Sunbiz is the Florida state website where LLCs are registered and where anyone can look them up, for free, without an account. Florida chose to make business records public, and that isn't going to change. What you can change is which address sits on each line. Some lines are easy. One is genuinely tricky, and we'll be straight with you about it.
This is general information, not legal advice. If your situation is unusual, a Florida attorney is worth the call.
The four places your home address can show up
- Principal office address. The place your business is actually run from.
- Mailing address. Where the state sends your LLC's mail.
- Registered agent address. Where legal papers get delivered, if you named yourself as the registered agent.
- Manager or authorized member address. The annual report lists at least one person with authority to manage the company, with a name, title and address (s. 605.0212).
There's a fifth thing people forget. Florida treats the email address you give the state as a public record too (Division of Corporations). Use a business email, not your personal one.
Step by step: take your home address off your record
Here's the order we'd do it in. Most people finish the online part in one sitting.
- Look yourself up. Search your LLC's name on Sunbiz and open the record. Write down every line that shows your home: principal office, mailing address, registered agent, managers, and the email at the bottom.
- Get the new address first. You need somewhere for the state's mail to land before you move the mailing line. A business address, a coworking space or a real office all work. Have the exact way it's written in front of you, including any suite or mailbox number.
- Change the mailing and principal office lines. Between January 1 and May 1, do it inside your annual report and it costs nothing extra. Any other time, it's an amended annual report, $50 for an LLC. Our guide on changing your LLC's address on Sunbiz walks through both.
- Change the manager address. If you only need to fix the address next to your name, Sunbiz has a separate page for someone who's already listed (manager address change).
- Swap the email. It's public too. Use a business email in the same filing.
- Deal with the registered agent line, if it's you. That's a separate filing with its own fee, and it means appointing a registered agent service with a Florida street address. More on that below.
- Tell the IRS. It doesn't read Sunbiz. Send Form 8822-B (more on that at the end).
Sunbiz says online changes post within minutes. Open your record again afterwards and check every line, because one missed field is all it takes.
The mailing address: the easy one
Florida lets the mailing address be a P.O. box, a commercial address or even a foreign address (Sunbiz filing instructions). So putting a business address here is completely ordinary. If your home is on this line today, this is the first thing to fix.
The manager address: easier than you think
Many owners assume this line needs a home address because it's about a person. It doesn't. Sunbiz's own help pages for the LLC annual report accept a P.O. box for managers (Sunbiz annual report help). A business address works fine. And if your articles of organization (the document that created your LLC) listed you with your home address, your next annual report is the moment to change it.
The registered agent: only if that's you
The registered agent is the person or company that accepts lawsuits and official legal notices for your LLC. Lots of owners name themselves to save money. That works, but it puts your address on the record, and it has to be a Florida street address where someone is present at least from 10 a.m. to noon on business days (s. 48.091).
If you'd rather not, you can appoint a registered agent service instead. Changing your registered agent uses its own form and fee on Sunbiz. Prima doesn't offer registered agent service, so this one is a separate provider.
The principal office: the honest gray area
Here's the tricky line. The principal office is where the business is really directed from, and Sunbiz says it "MUST BE A STREET ADDRESS," in capital letters. No P.O. boxes.
So what if you run the company from your spare bedroom? The plain answer is that your spare bedroom is, technically, your principal office. A virtual office address like ours is a real street address in a real building. But it carries a "#" and a mailbox number under USPS rules for businesses that receive mail for others, and no official Florida source we've found says whether that counts as a principal office street address. We've written about this in more detail in our guide on using a virtual office as your LLC's address.
What do people do in practice? Some work part of the week from a coworking space or a real office and list that, because it's true. Some put a virtual office address on both the principal and mailing lines and take the gray area as it is. Our view is simple. List the place that truthfully matches the definition, and if you're unsure, ask a Florida attorney before you file. And keep in mind that the mailing, manager and email lines are usually where most of the exposure is, and those are fully in your hands.
What you can't erase
Changing an address updates your current record. It doesn't scrub the past. Sunbiz keeps images of every document you filed, so an old annual report with your home address stays viewable. That's the frustrating part, and it's why it pays to switch before your next filing rather than after.
And there's a second layer. Plenty of business-data websites copy Sunbiz records, so your old address may still show up in a search on one of them. Many refresh from the state record on their next pass, and some have a form to ask for an update. We can't tell you how fast any of them will catch up. But once Sunbiz is right, the copies have something correct to copy.
There is one exception. Florida's public records law lets certain people, such as current and former police officers and judges and some others named in the law, ask state agencies to keep their home address confidential. The Department of State takes those requests on form DOS-119. If you're in one of those groups, it's worth a look. Most business owners aren't.
When to make the switch
You can change your principal office and mailing addresses online on Sunbiz at any time (Sunbiz address change). Or do everything in one go when you file your annual report, between January 1 and May 1. We explain that filing in our Florida LLC annual report guide.
Then tell the IRS, the US tax agency, separately. It doesn't read Sunbiz. Business address changes go on Form 8822-B.
Where Prima fits
Prima gives your LLC a street address at 2125 Biscayne Blvd in Miami, written "2125 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 300 #" plus your mailbox number. It fits the mailing line and the manager line without any gray area. Our team receives your mail in the building and you see every envelope in the app. Before we can receive mail for you, USPS (the US Postal Service) requires a short form called PS Form 1583, and you sign it online with a notary on a quick video call, included in every plan. See the business address for your Florida LLC or compare the plans. For the registered agent line, you'll still need someone else.
